Residential care for adults with learning disabilities

One of the most important things is that you have the right attitude. This means treating people with learning disabilities as people as individuals; people who have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. In a nutshell this means treating people as you would like to be treated yourself if you needed the same level of care.

The work is really varied and interesting. It can mean providing a full range of care to people who have physical disabilities, mobility problems, hearing or visual problems and other needs as well as their learning disability. The clients may need 24 hour care and if so this is usually provided within a residential care home. You would then be working as part of a staff team. The aim would be to provide any necessary assistance to help the individuals become as independent as possible. This could mean anything from helping them to get a drink to going to the cinema.
